Brazilian Workshop on Antitrust and Development in the Digital Economy
On July 25, on the sidelines of the BRICS Council of Ministers, the BRICS Antimonopoly Centre of the HSE-Skolkovo Institute for Law and Development, together with its partner universities - UCL and Insper - held an international seminar on the transformation of antitrust regulation towards "digital”. The seminar was the next stage in the preparation of the report “Antitrust Regulation in the Digital Economy for the Benefit of the BRICS countries,” which will be presented in September 2019 as part of the 6th BRICS International Competition Conference.
The main goal of the seminar was to discuss the legislative challenges in the field of antitrust related to the development of the digital economy and the rise of digital platforms. The first part of the seminar was devoted to global competition in the digital economy and the role of Brazilian players in the international arena, for large companies, and for startups. The afternoon program focused on regulatory and institutional contexts, primarily in the context of antitrust. The main speakers of the seminar were Alexey Ivanov, Director of the Institute for Law and Development; Ioannis Lianos, Leading Researcher of the Institute, Professor at UCL; Pablo Furquim de Azevedo, Professor at Insper University; and Chao Maria Pereiro Neta, Professor at the São Paulo Law School of the Jetulio Vargas Foundation (FGV).
